How I Became An Anime Feak!

When I was ten years old, I started watching a show called 'Toonami' every week day after around 3 o'clock. This show, "Sailor Moon," was my favorite and I started liking it a lot. At first, another show, before "Sailor Moon", was on at the same time called "Ronin Warriors". When I first looked at it, I didn't like it and kept watching "Sailor Moon". At the age of thirteen, I gave "Ronin Warriors" a chance and it turned out that I liked it alot.

Believe it or not, I had no idea what anime was when I first started watching. I went to the internet and did research. The more I researched about it, the more excited I became.

So, thanks to 'Toonami', I'm now an anime freak today and I'm proud!

What is Anime?!

History

I bet some people are wondering, "What is 'anime'?" Well....... anime is a japanese animated cartoon that comes right out of, the obvious, Japan^_^ This particular style of cartooning is very popular in USA and it's a $2 BILLION business. Believe it or not, for others that doesn't know what anime is, they have a tendency to confuse with that type of cartooning with the American cartooning. If a cartoon comes from Japan, then it's anime; however, if it's anime style and didn't come from Japan, then it's not anime.

What to look for in anime:
  • the facial features (i.e. eyes, nose, and mouth)

  • the hair and clothes

  • sometimes the religion aspect (i.e. Buddhism)
  • (This is in front of a temple)

  • simple shapes for expresions

(This is sometimes as "ummmmm" and other times it is used as a mild "OMG")

  • a particular movement to a particular expression

  • (Her arms are shown up in the air with a big X for eyes saying that she has been hit. The big X for eyes, is a way of saying "ow")

  • simple little symbols either on or near their faces
(The vain on his cheeks and on top of his head symbolized being angry and sometimes the vain by itself on the head means the character is extremely annoyed).

The only time anyone can ever tell, is it was originally in the Japanese language with english subtitles to it. Now, the anime can also come in 'English Dub', which means "English language".

Please, try to understand that just because some cartoons have the anime appearance, does not necessarily mean that it's anime. The style is the same; however, they may have came from different countries. I'll list a few so-called 'anime' shows that are not:

Not Anime:

Totally Spies
Code Lyoko
Avatar: The Last Air Bender
Boondocks

Just because these shows have the features of anime (listed above), that doesn't make them anime. Some are American made, one is French and another is Canadian. There is a big difference right there.

Popular shows that ARE Anime:

Naruto
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Inuyasha
Sailor Moon
DragonBall Z
Gundams (All)
Fruits Basket
Hellsing
Death Note

If you're becomeing interested in anime, totally awsome. Go by the list that are anime to help get you started and from there, you can explore to find out what types of anime suits you best.

Anyway, I hope this helps people understand the anime world a little better
